Autoflowers require around 18 to 24 hours of light each day during their vegetative stage and 12-18 hours of light per day when flowering. To provide this amount of consistent lighting, grow lights are an ideal choice for any indoor grower. Grow lights provide the right spectrum and intensity of light needed by autoflower plants for optimal growth.
Soil can vary in pH, with differents plants thriving in varying levels. Autoflowering strains are similar to photoperiod varieties in that they prefer a slightly acidic soil medium. Growers should try to keep their soil within an optimal pH range of 6.0–6.5. If purchasing soil, make sure the product is suitable in terms of acidity.
To initiate the flowering period, the lighting duration is reduced significantly (typically from 18 hours down to 12 hours), which also results in a lower DLI. Light intensity is then gradually increased to get big buds. Providing such a high DLI with just about 12 hours of lighting requires a strong grow light able to supply a high PPFD.
This provides ample room for roots to grow. Here’s some different pot sizes, and the average yield you can expect using each container: 2L: 100–150g/m² indoors or 35–40g/plant outdoors. 5L: 200–250g/m² indoors or 75–85g/plant outdoors. 11L and bigger: 400–500g/m² indoors or 150–170g/plant outdoors.
You can grow 12 to 18 autoflowers in a 4x8 tent. With a 4x8 tent, you have a number of growing options. To make the best use of space in this larger tent, a taller strain like Northern Lights x Big Bud auto or Girl Scout Cookies auto is recommended. These regularly top 1 m in height and can produce exceptional harvests.
How many hours of light do autoflowers need? For regular photoperiods, the hours of light per day depends on the stage of growth that the plant is in. For instance, during growth (after transplanting), many growers will go for 18/6 hours and during flowering this is switched to 12/12.
Encourage fast growth by using light and airy soil. Use a big-enough container: Autoflowers won’t grow too tall, but a pot that’s too small will negatively affect growth and yield. Don’t overdo it with water and nutrients: Autoflowers need less water and fewer nutrients than feminized cannabis. Don’t overdo it.
Autoflowers don’t need as many nutrients as photoperiod plants because they are compact in size. As long as you take care of the plants by providing at least 12-16 hours of light every day, they will grow well and reward you at the end of it all. Many people assume that autoflowers don’t yield a lot, but think about it.
